Nellie Burchett Hokiahse Bascus Davis Nellie passed away at age 94, a happy, active, lovely lady. She was extremely creative and used her artistic talents every day in some way. She excelled in making everything from stylish prom dress to tiny, beautiful doll clothes and gorgeous, complicated crochet pieces. Nothing was too difficult to figure out how to make, and then make it better than the original. Nellie designed 4 houses, each different than the other, and supervised their construction. One of her great joys was her flowers, even winning the most beautiful yard in her neighborhood. She ordered flowers and bulbs from catalogs and forced them to grow in the most inhospitable conditions. Nellie grew up in Kentucky with a family that raised pretty much all of their food. She learned gardening from her parents Zellie and Fred Burchett, and continued to have gardens everywhere she lived. There has never been a fruit that tasted as good as the strawberries she grew when living on Lake Keystone. Another thing she inherited from her parents was her love of fishing. She would take her mom and dad to the creeks outside Hominy to fish all day. They always came home with either giant catfish or other fish that were cleaned then "fried up" for dinner with leftovers for breakfast. When Nellie became a little older, she would stay all day on the lake. Nellie grew up in the era of big bands and country swing and loved to dance to this music. Actually she may have danced more after the age of 60 than before. Sadly she outlived her favorite dancing partners. She was a really good cook. Family favorites were fried chicken, macaroni salad, cinnamon apples, the perfect Thanksgiving dressing, and of course peaches and cream pie that we all make every summer. Nellie loved a good joke and funny greeting cards. Her great sense of humor was with her until the end. Even if she didn't quite "get" the joke, just the telling was enough to make her laugh. She loved watching the Hominy football team, the OSU Cowboys, and her boys on the Thunder whether live or on TV. In her younger days, she was a golfer at a time when sports were not played by many women. Nellie wasn't one to have millions of friends. Instead she always had a few choice pals. Her Hominy friends Martha, Connie, and Wiladean had great times together. She lost those 3 great pals early. When she moved to Tulsa she and her other Hominy friends, Evelyn, Ruby, and Elajean were "ladies who lunched" for many years. Luckily when she moved to St. Simeon's she found best friends in Norma and Patrice. What Nellie loved more than anything in the world was her family. She was our center of attention at family gatherings and we're grateful for all the happy times we had. Surviving and missing Nellie are her 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Priscilla and Skip Iba and Sharron Bascus and Gene Sikes; her grandchildren and their families, Krista Iba-Armstrong, David Armstrong and Clare, Kurt Iba, Cara Lisa Orrichio, Rich Mitten and Aurianna and Jack. Any memorials in Nellie's name may be made to the St. Simeon's Employee Christmas Fund. Memorial was a private family service. Arrangements were by Powell Funeral Home in Hominy, OK.
