Dorothy Manzer

Dorothy Leigh (Core) Manzer was born January 24, 1929, in Hominy, Oklahoma to Wiliam Bryan Core and Edna Elda (Townsend) Core. She had six brothers and two sisters. Dorothy attended Hominy schools from kindergarten through her senior year, enjoying small town life and school activities. In high school she was the leader of the drum and bugle corps. She performed at halftime shows and marched in parades.

After graduation Dorothy traveled to Bakersfield, California, where she met and married Herman Earl (Jr.) Manzer in May 1949. They started their family in February of 1950, which grew to include Debbie, Scott, Marla and Allison. They moved to 916 Janice Drive in 1957 and lived there for the next 39 years. All of Dorothy’s children attended Pioneer Drive where she was a regular room mother for the next 18 years. She was also a Cub Scout troop and Bluebird-Camp Fire Girls leader. Pioneer Drive School awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award for her service.

She attended night school at Bakersfield College, taking child development classes and became a Teacher’s Aide working at College Heights Elementary until 1996. In 1982, she was blessed with her first granddaughter, Brooke, followed by Alison in 1991. In the spring of 1996, Jr and Dorothy moved back to Hominy, where she has since resided. Dorothy became very active once she moved back to Hominy. She joined a bridge club with her neighborhood ladies, “the Brady Bunch.” Dorothy also became the Treasurer of Hominy Friends Church, was the Secretary of the Garden Club, a member of the Book Club, the Alumni Association and volunteered regularly at the Christs’ Cupboard and at elections. After moving to Hominy, she was able to visit regularly with her siblings, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins and other family members.

Dorothy traveled a lot during this time. Among her travels were trips to Ireland, an Alaskan Cruise, and sightseeing trips to London, New York, Washington D.C and Seattle. She has lived a very full life and loved every minute of it. On Friday, July 12, 2024, Dorothy Leigh Manzer passed from this life in Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. She will be missed by all her knew and loved her.

Dorothy is survived by her children Debbie (Alan) Destefani, Scott Manzer, Marla (John) Annear and Allison (Jim) Denson; one brother Carl Core; two grandchildren Brooke and Alison; many nieces, nephews and cousins. She is preceded in death by her husband Herman Earl (Jr) Manzer; parents William and Edna Core; siblings Floyd Core, Melvin Core, Jack Core, Kenneth Core, Marland Core, Lorrena Thompson, and Ida Mae Penn.

Dorothy will lie in state at 160 Core Rd, Hominy, Oklahoma - at the Wilcox Home - 9:00am to midnight.

The services for Dorothy Manzer will be held at the Hominy Friends Church on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, beginning with the traditional Osage Service at 9:30 am, followed by a Christian service at 10:30. and a traditional Osage meal after the services.
