Dr. Jackie Dwight Savage

J.D. Savage Obituary Dr. J.D. Savage departed this life on July 20, 2011, surrounded by his family in a peaceful manner. We too can now be at peace that he is no longer suffering and has been reunited with our beloved mother in the presence of Our Lord. Jackie Dwight Savage was born June 13, 1927, in Thayer, Kansas, the elder son of Homer Dwight and Edith Marie (Glentzer) Savage. His family moved to Oklahoma when he was in the first grade, allowing him to spend most of his childhood in Osage County. He graduated from Pawhuska High School in 1945, where he excelled in sports making the All-State Team in both football and basketball. After taking a year off after high school to help his father establish the Savage Ranch near Hominy, he then attended Kansas State College. There he played quarterback on the football team and was president of the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity. He received his degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1953. It was while at K-State that J.D. met and married his beloved wife, Jo Ann Alexander Savage. They were married in Manhattan, Kansas on August 23, 1952. Shortly after welcoming their first daughter, Susan, the family moved to Hominy in 1953. His family grew to include three more daughters: Kathryn, Linda and Sheryl; a son Jim followed in 1963. After moving to Hominy, J.D. founded the Osage Animal Clinic. He practiced in Hominy for 32 years. In 1954, he was commissioned as a lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. He was a member of the Rotary Club and served as president of the Hominy Chamber of Commerce. He was elected mayor of Hominy in 1961, and later that year was recognized by the Oklahoma Jaycees as one of Three Outstanding Young Oklahomans. After retiring from practice in 1985, he devoted himself to ranching full time with his brother, U.G. "Butch" Savage. After nearly 20 years, he retired from ranching. J.D. is survived by his five children. His wife Jody preceded him in death in 1997. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Daniel, Josh and Cody Baker; Kami Green; Trey Hall; Leah Mansfield; Kari Barr; and Anna, Nathaniel, Dominic and Vincent Savage. He had eight great-grandchildren, with a new great-granddaughter expected to arrive within 2 weeks. Interment will be at Albert Joseph Powell Memorial Cemetery. In accordance with his wishes the family asks that in lieu of flowers, a gift may be made to the First Christian Church in Hominy.
