George "Salty" Mcguire Jr.

George Warner "Salty" McGuire, Jr. was born June 18, 1925 in Skedee Oklahoma to George Warner McGuire, Sr. and Lenora (Ratcliff) McGuire. He passed from this life on Thursday, January 17, 2013 in Norman Oklahoma having reached the age of 87 years and 7 months. He earned and was awarded the Eagle Scout Badge on behalf of The National Council of The Boy Scouts of America, September 1942. Immediately upon graduating from Skedee High School in May of 1943, he joined the United States Navy. He was trained at San Diego, CA, Iowa State College, Ames IA, and New London, CT for submarine duty on the USS Raton. He served in Western Australia and the South Pacific in the battle of Leyte Gulf for the liberation of the Philippines. While on leave from the Navy, he married the love of his life, Betty Jo "Jody" Perrine November 7, 1945. She preceded him in death July 19, 2009. They made their home in Pawnee, OK until December 1998, when they moved to Norman, OK to be closer to their sons. While in Pawnee, he was a member of The First Baptist Church serving at various times as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, and deacon. After moving to Norman, he was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He was employed at Colvin Wholesale Vending, First National Bank, and Pawnee National Bank before working at the U.S. Post Office in Pawnee before his retirement. He took pride in raising hogs and being a cattle rancher. He coached little league baseball, was a member of Lion's Club, and served on various Chamber of Commerce committees, including one year as President. He loved his hometown and always told people he was from Pawnee, even after his move to Norman. He and Jody loved to travel and crisscross this great country of ours in their Airstream trailer. They did this in their early years of marriage with their family, and later with their Airstream friends or by themselves. He served as a state and regional officer in their Airstream club, Wally Byam Caravan Club International. Through the 40+ years in this club, they made many lifelong friends. They both loved sports, and attended many University of Oklahoma events as well as events across the U.S. and Canada. Though Salty led a busy and active life, always on the go, his greatest love was for his immediate family. He would always make time, change plans, and sacrifice what was necessary to help his family. He had a special bond with all of his grandchildren. His later years were filled with fun times when all his grandchildren gathered at his pool for swimming and pizza. They loved spending time with their "Pa Pa" and "G-Pa". He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years and his parents. He is survived by his sons, Randy and his wife Sallie, Kyle K. and his wife Margie, granddaughter Meagan, all of Norman, his grandson Scottie Bryan and his wife April, great grandchildren Madeline and Jackson, all of Edmond, as well as several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, Pawnee, OK. Interment to follow at Highland Cemetery, Pawnee, OK under the direction of Poteet Funeral Home. -
