Helen Marie Moses was born in Comanche, Oklahoma to Hewie Robert and Anna Laura (Mobley) Cunningham. Helen grew up with her older sister Suzie. Her parents were very encouraging and very caring, they wanted their children to do well. Helen went to Comanche junior high and high school. Helen loved books and reading, she would read into the night. She was the valedictorian in her class. Helen won a trip to Seattle from Oklahoma Science Fair to compete in the Seattle World’s Fair 1964. Helen was very active with science. She had a couple of teachers who took an interest in her. Helen helped her sister cut out articles for her debates.
She attended college in Lawton, Oklahoma before transferring to The Oklahoma Women’s College in Chickasha, where she earned a bachelor’s degree. While at Lawton she won the Lawton Science Fair, which took her to the international science fair in New York. She also went to the Baltimore Science Fair (where she saw Barbara Streisand). She went on to Northeastern State University to earn her master’s degree. Helen taught Middle School. Helen loved to work.
Helen married Edward H Moses on December 3, 1984, in Nowata, Oklahoma. Helen raised three children, Edward, Michelle, and Michael. She also helped raise her grandchildren.
Helen was the director of the Tulsa Indian Youth Counsel during the nineties. She was a social worker in Tulsa for DHS where she got her back hurt. Helen was an art collector; she did tribal ribbon work. She enjoyed making tribal shawls. Helen was proud of her native heritage, she quilted and loved to cook/baking. She was a loving mother and grandmother.
Helen Marie Moses passed from this life on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, at her residence in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Special thanks to Kaiser Coachman and Jacob Moses for caregiving of Helen, also to Evergreen Hospice for all their help. Very special thanks to Shanna Blevins for all her oversite
She is survived by her son Michael Osage Moses and daughter Michelle Grace Fero; her sister Suzie Ethridge; her care giver Shanna Blevins; grandchildren Corey Moses, Kazier Coachman, Jacob Moses, Jayden Moses, Joshua Moses, and Jamison Moses; two nephews Robert Ethridge and Stephen Ethridge; She is preceded in death by her son Edward Scott Moses, her parents, and ex-husband Edward H Moses
Services for Helen Moses will be Friday, May 12, 2023, at 10:00am at Hominy Friends Church at Hwy 99 and Friends Street. Burial at A J Powell Memorial Cemetery. All service are arranged by Powell Funeral Service in Hominy, Oklahoma
