Opal Etna Hammons Obituary Opal Etna Hammons passed away on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at her home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was ninety-five years old. She was born October 28, 1914 in Bald Hill, Oklahoma to Samuel Lee and Gertrude C. (Meek) Morgan, Opal was the tenth of twenty-one children. For most of her adult life Opal made her home in Hominy where she was a member of the First Baptist Church. Later in life, she lived with her daughter, Joyce Wicks in McLeod, Texas for several years. Since 2002 she had lived with her daughter, Alice Mauldin in Tulsa. In 1945, she was widowed for the second time and became the sole support for her five children who ranged in age from two-years old to thirteen-years old. Through sheer will, she kept her family together and throughout her life she taught her children the pride and dignity that comes only through hard, honest work. She will be remembered by the many children for whom she was a caregiver and by her own childrens many friends who were always welcome in her home. She is survived by her two sisters- Marjorie Brown and Janetta Teeters; her three daughters- Alice (Eldridge) Mauldin of Tulsa, Beverly Ann (Hammons) Weldon of Tulsa, and Sharon (Hammons) Edwards and husband Bill of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren- Sandra K. Macy Little, Linda Macy Hirsch, Janet Coleman, Rhonda Weldon, Tony Gorrell, Brett Weldon, Dustie Hammons, Kimberly Doering, Justin Hammons and Kevin Edwards; thirteen great grandchildren and one great, great grandson. Her family is thankful to the Lord for blessing Opal with robust health and a sharp mind up until the very end of her life. She was greatly loved. Opal was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband- Taylor O. Eldridge; her second husband- Claude W. Hammons; eighteen of her brothers and sisters; her daughter- Joyce (Eldridge) Wicks; her son- Robert W. Hammons; and her grandson- Michael Dwayne Macy. Services for Opal will be Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor, Mark Formby officiating. Vocalist Frank Hudson and taped music selections are Farther Along , How Great Thou Art , In the Sweet By and By , Ill Fly Away and Amazing Grace . Pall Bearers are Shawn Hirsch, Ricky Million, Tom Coleman, Kevin Edwards, Brett Weldon, Tony Gorrell and Honorary Pall Bearers Eric Johnson and Bill Doering. Interment will be at the A.J. Powell Cemetery Pavilion with Powell Funeral Home making the arrangements.
