Sue Mae Phillips, longtime Hominy resident, passed from this life to her heavenly home on Sunday, October 8, 2023, at the age of 84 years. Sue was born May 24, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama to Frank Lionel and Irma Ailene (Booth) Armstrong. She was raised and received her education in Montgomery. She met her future husband in a Soda shop where she worked, and shortly after, Sue and Thomas F. Phillips were united in marriage on January 14, 1956. Tom had received his bachelor's and master's degree in teaching and administration, and because of this, he and Sue lived in Arkansas and Kansas before making Hominy their home in the summer of 1968. Sue operated her own childcare center out of her home for many years. She also sold Avon and because of her love of sewing, she was famous for making Raggedy Ann and Andy Dolls. Sue loved cooking for her family and having them all together. She especially loved the vacation trips with grandchildren and later, enjoyed taking vacations with her husband. Sue and Tom had been married for sixty-three years at the time of his passing in July of 2019.
Those that survive include her sons - Thomas F. Phillips, Jr and wife Margie, Richard Phillips and wife Monica, Nathan Phillips and wife Sabrina; daughters - Kathy Smith and Susan Pogue and husband Gary; grandchildren: Michael Glenn, Heather Irick, Thomas Phillips, III, Lindsay Owens, Kathryn Dupree, Nathan Smith, Joshua Pogue, Monica Phillips, Samantha Phillips, Victoria Balbes and Amanda Phillips. Also surviving are 17 great grandchildren, a brother Marvin Armstrong and a special niece Charlotte Croom. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Tom, granddaughters Kiley & Ashley Smith and eight siblings.
Funeral services for Sue will be at 10:30 am Thursday, October 12th in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, Hominy with Pastor Mark Formby officiating. Committal rites will follow in the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery, Hominy. There will be a visitation Wednesday from 4pm - 7pm at the Powell Funeral Home.
