Virgil Hiram Thomas, former Wynona resident, passed from this life on Friday, June 5, 2015 at the Lawton Veterans Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Virgil was 90 years of age. He was born in Wynona, Oklahoma on June 6, 1924 to Virgil "Joe" and Birdie (Horine) Thomas. Virgil grew up in Wynona and attended Wynona High School. On May 4, 1943 he enlisted in the U.S. Army, being honorably discharged in 1973 as a First Sergeant, following 30 years of service. During his service, he served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam receiving the following decorations and medals: Bronze Star Medal, Air Medal, Army Commendation Medal (1st Award), National Defense Service Medal (Korea), National Defense Service Medal (1 Oak Leaf Cluster) (Vietnam), Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, Over Seas Bars (8 Individual), Philippine Presidential Unit Citation Medal (WWII), Army of Occupation Medal (Germany WWII), Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (WWII), Philippine Liberation Medal (WWII), World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal (WWII), United Nations Medal (Korea), Korean Service Medal, Marksman and Sharpshooter Rifle Badges, and Good Conduct Medal (9 Awards) and (10) Service Stripes. While serving in the Army, Virgil married Oswaldi J. Ulaga on April 28, 1950 in Schwabach, Germany. They had three children of this marriage; Drexell, Glennda and Robert and were married for 23 years. They divorced in 1973. On July 29, 1975, Virgil married Betty (Greenwood) Townley in Bartlesville, Oklahoma and then made their home in Wynona. Being retired from the Army, Virgil worked for a time as a pipefitter on the oil pipeline. Virgil loved fishing and gardening, and during earlier years enjoyed bowling. He was a loving Father and Grandfather and will be greatly missed. Those that survive include: his wife, Betty of Bartlesville, OK; a son, Drexell Thomas and wife Hedi of Lawton, OK; a daughter, Glennda Felker and husband Paul of Lacy, Washington; 5 step-children; 2 brothers: Tony Thomas of Oregon and Paul Thomas of Burbank, OK. Also surviving are 2 grandchildren, 7 step-grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 6 step-great grandchildren and 2 step-great great grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his infant son, Robert Thomas; his brother, Troy Thomas; and his sister, Joyce Moles. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm, Wednesday, June 10, 2015 in the Powell Funeral Home Chapel in Hominy, Oklahoma with the Pastor David Downing officiating. Musical selections were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "I Can Only Imagine". Pallbearers were Joe Townley, Rick Townley, Lindal Townley, Jerry Townley, Carl Thomas and Tracy Thomas. Burial followed in the A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery with Full Military Funeral Honors accorded by the United States Army from Fort Sill, Oklahoma.
